While we anxiously wait to return to Derry on September 6, Pennywise returned to Hollywood, CA. Occupying the same space he did 2 seasons ago; the empty lot now features the Derry Canal Days Festival Funhouse.
With an advertised "40 Minutes" of fun, the venue features more than just a walkthrough this year. Guests have about 15 minutes to enjoy a miniature carnival before entering the funhouse. Each carnival skill game is essential a competition and more than one person is required before they allow you to play. The main reason is because the winner gets to spin a prize wheel later on at the end of the entire experience. In the carnival area; there are: 3 games, 1 ferris wheel (display only), and a bunch of red balloons (photo op).
The entrance of the funhouse starts with a revolving tunnel, then leads you through a corridor with bodies hanging and then into the hall of mirrors just like the movie. The rest of the walkthrough is structured much like the original IT Experience with the Neibolt House. It features a guide that walks you into each room and tells you a brief story until something happens. The guide that we had did a decent job setting up for the scare. In some instances, we were distracted by the guide talking so we didn't notice scare actors that popped out from nowhere. In other instances, it was the decor and the automated props that distracted us. There were quite a few sets that were familiar from what we've seen in the previews.
During the grand finale, we were told to go down into the sewer. When we got through, we ended up in the bleacher scene with it shaking; unsure of what to expect. While distracted by the constant shaking and rumbling, the man of the hour appears and scares some of the members in our group half to death. Not everyone floats down here.
If you had your ticket reserved and find yourself with a minimal wait time, then this attraction is definitely worth the wait. It does get hot outside with minimal shade, so plan accordingly if you have to wait in stand-by. Unfortunately since "IT ends here", this will likely be the last time we see an IT Experience on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. It's been fun.
